I saw this picture and instantly thought how cool it would look in a silhouette composition. I choose obvious colors to complement the mood of the painting. I always paint the silhouette first and fill the back ground in last and painting between the bars was a challenge to say the least. I really like how it turned out though.

I started painting bird silhouettes in 2010, because I began to notice birds everywhere. If my little girls weren’t playing Angry Birds on my husband’s phone, I was passing a ceramic figurine in Pottery Barn. Friends were constantly talking about what “so and so” had just “tweeted.” I noticed Microsoft adopted a humming bird icon. It seemed that my obsession with the creature was not unwarranted. Still, my critiques and enthusiasts alike would ask “Why birds?” Who of us has not had a period of darkness, a flock of misfortunes to endure? Those are the moments that best define us. They are the periods in our lives that empower us as we realize our strength in endurance. Birds brave the darkness only to sing at dawn. I paint birds because I see them as courageous, grateful spirits. They are creatures we are all capable of emulating in our flight through the storms that encircle our lives. I incorporate birds, circles and silhouettes in my work. I use simple shapes and simple lines, imitating a graphic design feel in a hand-painted piece. My hope is that my works will inspire others to pause and reflect on the beauty of their own flights.
